Photographing Puffins on Skomer Island

Skomer has the largest breeding population of Manx Shearwaters in the world-over 300,000 pairs nest in the burrows of Skomer Island . We didn't get to see any of the Shearwaters as they were hidden in their burrows or out at sea fishing, these birds have also adopted nocturnal habits to escape from predatory Great Black-backed Gulls.

Thankfully we came for the Puffins and the island plays host to over 25,000 breeding Puffins, the largest colony in Southern Britian .

It's a bit of a Challenge to get to the Island of Skomer and the best time to see Puffins is between April and the end of July. Daily Skomer Island Landings depart Martins Haven three times a day and with only 150 seats up for grabs you have to ensure that you are at the ticket office circa 0600Hrs otherwise you may miss out on the trip. One thing you can't book a trip in advance . The company that operates these trips is Dale Sailing and the contact nos are 01646 603109/ 6031233.

The best place to see Puffins are at the North Haven and the Wick, they are fearless but by the begining of August only a few of these wonderful birds remain.

There are Puffins all around the Island but I don't think that it is possible to cover the Island in one Trip,  for your first visit I would advise you to follow the Southern Route via the Old Farm, to Skomer Head and then the Wick with a final flourish around the South Plateau and back to the Landing Place.

Skomers island enviroment contains a wealth of Wildlife and add to this a spectacular landsacpe and you can see why the Island attracts everyone from far and wide.
